Flight to and from Copenhagen, Denmark, arranged by the participants themselves. Members of the tour group will stay at either the Phoenix Hotel (a 17th century building at Bredgade 37) or at the Hotel Opera (Tordenskjoldsgade 15). Both hotels are well situated close to all the attractions.
Please note: The Copenhagen tour is all about walking, and everything on the programme is within walking distance of the hotels. However, in the museums there are several staircases to climb and no elevators.
Copenhagen, Day 1 Tuesday 14 June 2011
A short walk from the hotels to the DFDS Canal Tours in Nyhavn. Starting from the Hotel Opera, Tordenskjoldsgade 15 and from the Hotel Phoenix, Bredgade 37.
One-hour Grand Tour by boat - Copenhagen on the water and under the bridges.
Walk from Nyhavn to Danish Museum of Art and Design, Bredgade 68. (until recently Kunstindustrimuseet, or Museum of Decorative and Applied Art).
Danish Museum of Art and Design. The museum has a large collection of interesting textiles and tapestries as well as other works of applied arts.
Walk from the museum to the famous Danish department store Magasin du Nord, Kongens Nytorv 13.
Lunch at Magasin du Nord, top floor.
Walk to the King’s Garden and Rosenborg Castle (Rosenborg slot), built by the King Christian IV in the beginning of the 17th century, Øster Voldgade 4A.
At the Rosenborg Castle, visiting the Treasury with the Crown Jewels, the Royal apartments and viewing the collections of amber, ivory, paintings and arms.
At the Rosenborg Castle, viewing the Great Hall with its thrones of the Danish Kings and Queens as well as life size silver lions (later copies are at the V&A, London). The King’s throne was made in 1662 from narwhal ivory.
Free time
Mingle reception at the Hotel Phoenix’s famous bar, Bredgade 37. A glass of sparkling wine and snacks will be served.
Please, note that eventual dinner is provided by the tour participants themselves and is not included in the program.

Copenhagen, Day 2 Wednesday 15 June 2011
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUT FROM YOUR ROOMS BEFORE THE DAY’S TOUR STARTS. BRING YOUR LUGGAGE DOWN TO THE LOBBY AND IT WILL BE KEPT IN THE HOTELS.
Walk from the hotels to Nyhavn, where the both groups meet.
Walk to the David Collection (Davids Samling), Kronprinsessegade 30-32.
At the David Collection, second floor, introduction to the museum and its Islamic collection by Director Kjeld von Folsach. The museums Islamic collection today ranks among the ten best in the Western World.
At the David Collection, viewing a large so-called Seljuk carpet fragment, a small Mamluk carpet, a Mughul millefleurs rug, a 17th century Indian flower and lattice carpet (published by F.R: Martin in 1908) and some other extraordinary and very rare textiles.
Short walk to the restaurant Orangeriet, Kronprinsessegade 13 (opposite the museum) 45 persons, and the Restaurant Pastis, Gothersgade 52, 35 persons.
Lunch at Orangeriet and Pastis.
Longer walk to the Amalienborg Royal Palace, Christian VIII’s Palæ and to the Marble Church or Frederick’s Church (Frederiks Kirke), Frederiksgade 4.
Group 1, 40 persons: visits the Amalienborg Royal Palace and the Amalienborg Museum, one of the former king’s apartments, with furnishings that include paintings and large 19th century carpets.
Group 2, 40 persons: visits the Baroque Marble Church with its beautiful copper dome, inspired by the Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
The groups switch place: Group 1 walks to the Marble church, group 2 to the Amalienborg Royal Palace.

Post-Conference Tour to St. Petersburg 20-23 June 2011

St. Petersburg, Day 1 Monday 20 June 2011
The tour will start at 9.00 am with a transfer from the hotel to the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (MAE, the Kunstkamera) where every participant will receive a book about the museum. There will be an exhibition tour with emphasis on textiles and a show-and-tell of around 20 Baluch rugs and around 20 Central Asian ikats.
In the afternoon we will visit the Russian Ethnographic Museum (REM), beginning with lunch in the Oval Hall, followed by the opening in the Marble Hall of the exhibition ‘The Megastars of the REM Carpet Collections’. The exhibition includes Caucasian, Central Asian, Bessarabian and Russian folk-art rugs. Thereafter there will be a show-and–tell with Central Asian, Turkmen and Bessarabian rugs and textiles from the collections, followed by a visit to the Treasury to see jewellery and silverware.
St. Petersburg, Day 2 Tuesday 21 June 2011
The tour will start at 9.00 am with a transfer from the hotel to the State Hermitage Museum, where there will be a PowerPoint presentation of the Hermitage carpets and the important historic textile collections. That is followed by a visit to the Pazyryk carpet and other Pazyryk finds as well as other displays of early nomad art, including the early textiles from Moschevaya Balka, and the Scythian gold and other precious objects in the Oriental Department Treasury.
After lunch there will be a show-and-tell with a small selection of Oriental carpets, among them a 16th century sumakh, the so-called ‘Holbein’ sumakh carpet, and a 14th century zilu. A general tour of the Museum will follow.
St. Petersburg, Day 3 Wednesday 22 June 2011
The tour will start at 9.00 am with a transfer from the hotel to the State Hermitage Conservation and Storage Facility (to be confirmed).
After lunch we will visit the Peterhoff Museum-Reserve and tour the Grand Museum, the pavilions, some with tapestries, the park and the fountains.
St. Petersburg, Day 4 Thursday 23 June 2011
The tour will start at 9.00 am with a transfer from the hotel to the Tsarskoye Selo Palace-Museum, Catherine’s the Great’s palace, which houses, among others, knotted carpets ordered by Catherine to commemorate victory in the Russo-Turkish war.
In the afternoon we will visit the Pavlovsk Palace.Museum, which belonged to Tsar Paul the First. There will be a tour of the museum with emphasis on tapestries and carpets. We then return to the hotel, and in the evening a farewell party with good food and live music will be held on a boat cruising on the River Neva.
Important! All Post-ICOC Tour participants are responsible for obtaining their own visas for Russia before coming to Stockholm!

Numbers are limited and distributed on a first come- first serve basis. The tours are only open to conference participants and companions.
Registration for both tours is done when you register for the main conference.
Important! All Post-ICOC Tour participants are responsible for obtaining their own visa to Russia before coming to Stockholm! The fee is not refundable if visa to Russia is not approved, regular cancellation policies applies.
For an invitation letter to Russia, send an email to luba_blinova@mail.ru with a photocopy of your passport containing the following information: Full Name, date of birth, passport number and email address of each person applying. Make sure to write ICOC2011 in the subjectfield of the email. This invitation letter can then be used when applying for the Russian visa.
