Call for Papers
The Academic Committee invites Proposals for the
12th International Conference on Oriental Carpets (ICOC XII)
to be held in Stockholm, Sweden, June 16-19, 2011
The deadline for submission of Proposals has been extended to 8th November 2010.
Proposals, which must be submitted in English in digital form, must include
1. Title;
2. The Session type (General, Special);
3. A detailed Abstract of up to 800 words; and
4. Name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone and fax number (if available).
Proposed papers must be original and previously unpublished works. Abstracts should identify new
information, arguments and supportive evidence. Proposals must contain a clear description and
examples of the visual materials that will be used in the presentation, and for subsequent publication.
Only oral presentations will be accepted for ICOC XII. There will be no Poster Sessions. PowerPoint
or equivalent digital presentations are mandatory. There will be no provision for 35mm slide projection.
General Sessions
All traditional areas of carpet studies will be considered, including early and later
nomad, village and workshop pile carpets and flat-weaves gathered by geographical origin (North Africa,
Anatolia, Central Asia, Persia, Caucasus, India, Tibet and the Far East, etc.). Applicants are also invited to
submit papers on structure and technique, carpet designs and their origin, relationships between textiles
and carpets, dating, documentary evidence, scientific tests, conservation and restoration, fakes and copies,
collections and collectors, Oriental carpets in interiors. The maximum presentation time is 15-20 minutes
in the General Sessions.
Special Sessions
These are intended to enhance the academic and scientific quality of the Conference.
A Session Chair will be responsible for organising and co-ordinating each Special Session. The maximum
presentation time is 25-30 minutes in the Special Sessions. The Special Sessions proposed for ICOC XII are:
1. Scandinavian Rugs and Textiles (chair M. Nockert);
2. Historic Russian and Scandinavian Rug Collectors and Collections (chairs E. Tsareva & T. Farnham);
3. Early Textile Finds in the History of Carpet Weaving with special emphasis on relationships to
descendant rug weaving traditions, (chairs P. Bichler & M. Nockert);
4. Turkmen and Central Asian Rugs and textiles, linked to the Special Exhibition (chair E. Tsareva).
Submission and Consideration of Proposals
English is the sole conference language. In considering
proposals, the Committee will take account of, and if necessary ascertain in advance, the proposer’s
ability to express him/herself clearly in spoken English. The material for the presentation should be
submitted digitally to the Academic Committee as a condition of final acceptance and qualification for
the possible payment of expenses (see below) no later than 1 May 2011.
Publication of Conference Papers
Acceptance to present a paper at ICOC XII carries with it the
obligation to submit a written manuscript with publishable visual materials for exclusive publication in a
volume of Oriental Carpet and Textile Studies (OCTS).
Expenses and Honoraria
Presenters who comply with all ICOC requirements for Conference presentations (including preprints) and for submission of papers for OCTS will not be required to pay the basic conference registration fee. Shared accommodations will also be provided and, depending on need and the availability of funds, some travel expenses may also be available.
Abstracts should be submitted to the Conference website
Please note that from this Conference we have started a new system for submitting your paper proposal and your abstract. Click on the link for online Paper Submission and follow the instructions. An automatic response will inform you that your proposal has been received and will be submitted to the Academic Committee. After the Academic Committee will have examined all the proposals arrived within the given deadline of 8thNovember 2010, you will be informed if your paper has been accepted or not.
Please read carefully the Call for Papers and make a proposal that can be related to the suggested topics . If you choose one of the Special Sessions, please contact first the chair of that session (e-mail addresses are visible on the c/c line in this message). You will notice that we have decided to upgrade as much as possible the quality of presentations at the next Conference and for this reason we have also decided to reduce the number of accepted papers to a maximum of 40. Only oral presentations will be accepted for ICOC 12th, there will be no Poster Sessions.
